In general, remake movies encounter immense criticisms and dissatisfies the audiences who have already watched the original version. But it is not the same in some of the remakes and it becomes equal or little better than the original version. The following movies are remade from the other languages into Kannada language by the Sandalwood industry.
Yajamana
Based on the Tamil movie “Vanathaippola”, this movie ‘Yajamana’ is a remake starring “Sahasa Simha” Vishnuvardhan in the dual role played by actor Vijayakanth in Tamil. This movie was released in 2000 under R.Sheshadri and Radha Bharathi direction. It became an industrial hit and an all-time blockbuster with more than ₹20 crore collection and 100 days of theatrical run. This movie is now streaming in “Jio Cinema”.
Buddhivantha
The Real Star Upendra who did the lead role in the remake movie “Buddhivantha”, released in 2008. This was a remake of a Tamil movie “Naan Avanillai”. Along with Upendra, Pooja Gandhi, Brinda Parekh, Saloni Aswani, Natanya Singh played the lead roles. Ramnath Rugvedi directed this movie and the music director of the Tamil and Kannada version was Vijay Antony. This movie became a massive triumph commercially and critically than the original Tamil movie. The box office collection was ₹15 crore and recognised as the highest grossing movie of that year with 100 day theatrical run. It is streaming in Disney+ Hotstar
Cheluvina Chittara
The heart touching and gripping love story from the Kollywood industry “Kadhal” was remade as “Cheluvina Chittara” in the Sandalwood. The two leading roles were played by Ganesh and Amoolya; with the writing of the original Tamil movie Balaji Sakthivel this movie was directed by S.Narayan. It was released in 2007 and now it is streaming in Disney+ Hotstar. This remake movie was celebrated by the people and it earned the title of “Golden Star” for actor Ganesh. With 175 days of theatrical run, this movie has a box office collection of ₹30 crore.
Ajay
Appu aka late Puneeth Rajkumar played the protagonist in the remake movie “Ajay” of both Telugu “Okkadu” and Tamil “Ghilli”. It was released in 2006, though this movie was a successful one the data of box office collection and the theatrical run hasn’t been mentioned anywhere. Actor Prakash Raj did the antagonist role as he did in both Telugu and Tamil versions. Anuradha Mehta was the female protagonist and Meher Ramesh was the director of this remake movie. It was one of the trademark commercial movies of Puneeth Rajkumar. It is now streaming in ‘Jio Cinema’.
Ranna
Another commercially successful remake of Sandalwood is “Ranna” with actor Sudeep in the lead role. This was a remake of Telugu movie “Attarintiki Daredi” starring Pawan Kalyan alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The cast of this movie are Prakash Raj, Rachita Ram, Haripriya, Madhoo and Devaraj. It was directed by Nanda Kishore and released in 2015. It is now streaming on Sun Nxt. The box office collection of this movie was ₹20 crore.
Bulbul
The next remake movie “Bulbul” is a romantic comedy starring the Challenging star Darshan alongside Rachita Ram. This movie was directed by M.D.Sridhar who made this remake from the Telugu movie “Darling” starring Pan India, Rebel Star Prabhas and Kajal Agarwal. The box office collection of this movie was ₹25 crore and it is streaming on Zee5 ott platform.
Maanikya
Actor Sudeep’s another remake movie from the Telugu movie “Mirchi” was titled as “Maanikya” which was released in 2014. This movie was directed by Sudeep himself. This movie became the highest grossing movie with the box office collection of ₹35 crore in the year 2014. V.Ravichandran, Ranya Rao, Varalaxmi, Ramya Krishna and P.Ravi Shankar played the lead roles.
Kirataka
KGF fame actor Yash’s remake movie “Kirataka” was remade from the romantic comedy Tamil movie “Kalavani”. This movie was the first commercial hit for Yash with the box office collection of ₹3 crores, 50 day theatrical run in Karnataka and 100 day theatrical run in Bangalore. The female lead of Tamil movie actress Oviya played in the Kannada remake too, with this she made her Kannada debut movie.
Drushya
The Malayalam crime thriller movie “Drishyam” directed by Jeethu Joseph was remade in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi. In ” Sandalwood”, the male lead role was played by “Crazy Star” of Kannada Cinema V.Ravichandran alongside Navya Nair. The legendary music director and Maestro Ilaiyaraja did the background score for this movie. It was directed by P.Vasu with the story of director Jeethu Joseph. It did so well in Karnataka with 100 theatrical runs and received enormous rational reviews and support from the people.
