‘Marco’ faces Ban! CBFC denies TV Satellite Rights due to ‘Extreme Violence’ 

One of the most spoken movies in the past months, Unni Mukundan starrer ‘Marco’ is denied Telecast rights for uncut version quoting ‘Extreme Violence’ in the movie.

Marco’ made waves as one of the most grossing and celebrated films this year with equal measure of controversy. Haneef Adeni’s ‘Marco’ is now under the fire for the streaming and satellite telecast approval with Nadeem Thufali T, the Regional Officer of CBFC has urged the board to confine the OTT release too. 

The Unni Mukundan starrer released in December 2024 faced issues with the OTT release for its Uncut or Uncensored version. Amidst the CBFC granting ‘A’ certificate for its theatrical issue, the movie faced blocks for the OTT release. Now ‘Marco’ is blocked for Television Satellite Rights citing ‘Extreme Violent Content’.

Marco has already been certified A by the CBFC. Parents should exercise caution when allowing children to watch such films. The CBFC’s role is limited to certification and does not involve censorship. We have rejected the satellite rights for the movie Marco as it’s not suitable for a family audience,” Nadeem Thufali, the Regional CBFC Officer told Manorama News. The officer has also urged the centre to revoke ‘Marco’ movie’s OTT streaming rights.

This has sparked a debate among several sectors including the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan spoke on how the younger generation are easily influenced by the violent content from films and reflects the same in their lives, stating a recent alleging incident of students contacting a gangster, after watching Fahadh Faasil’s ‘Aavesham’. All these accusations are rejected by FEFKA – Film Employees Federation of Kerala denies the influence of films in the recent violent acts among younger generations. Similarly seasoned actor Jagadheesh also pointed out if violence is spread due to films, won’t the good also be learnt by the audience, backing the film.

Both the blockbuster films have high octane and extreme violent scenes that might be gory and disturbing for the viewers. With rising popularity and stardom, these movies certainly became hits among contemporary stories for the reasons of ‘action’ combined with ‘violence’.
