‘Identity’ Movie Review: Tovino Thomas and Trisha Krishnan starrer lays out a compelling story dwarfed by tangled narration

Identity as the movie itself revolves around the ‘Identity’ of the characters, especially Tovino Thomas, Trisha Krishnan and Vinay Rai who are all actively involved in solving a crime, rooting for an interesting thriller.

REVIEW OVERVIEW

Identity

‘Identity’ is officially the kick start of Malayalam Film Industry in 2025 and stars Tovino Thomas, Trisha Krishnan and Vinay Rai in the lead roles. The story as revealed in the trailer is about a crime for which Allan (Vinay Rai) is the investigating officer who in order to safeguard Alisha (Trisha) who is the prime eye witness of the perpetrator and in joins Haran Shankar (Tovino Thomas) a talented sketch artist. This is just the scratch on the surface as the whole movie is multi-layered and certainly travels with several ebbs and lows throughout the narrative.

Identity Plot

A brutal crime leads officer Allan to rescue Alisha who is involved in the incident is moved to Kochi where Haran with an Obsessive Personality Disorder is a perfectionist and a sketch artist who is talented in sketching faces of perpetrators and criminals joins the case which in its underbelly opens up to several secrets, manipulations and flashbacks that reveal the ‘Identity’ of the people.

The Positive Aspects

The way Tovino Thomas handles his characters as Haran Shankar is impressive. He has maintained a degree of knowledge and clarity about the character who is held back, prim and proper with a sense of understanding and curiosity etched on his face. This maintains a solid appearance on screen throughout the rapid and slightly overdone screenplay.

The way the initial half of the movie is a blend of exciting screenplay and unraveling of twists and turns about the characters, especially about the way they informed about Alisha’s accident that left her with a Face Blindness, a condition that makes it difficult for her to recall the faces of people, another huge twist in the narrative as Alisha is the key witness.

Directors Akhil Paul and Anas Khan have mastered the way of making people expect something every 15 minutes of the narration while also staying consistent in delivering the same, only retracting a few times off lane to work out other sub stories, maintaining the natural flow of a proper Police investigation from the perspectives of the characters.

Music by Jakes Bejoy heightens and elevates the narrative be it from building tension in the start or when a fight breaks in a flying aircraft, it is the music that lifts the feel more than the visuals.

The Negative Aspects

Although the tight knit narrative easily weaves curious patterns of twists and layers of intriguing characters and traits of the already known characters such as Haran’s past and Alisha’s condition, they slip around the points where the story deviates in order to explain the identity of the characters.

The way the story is intended to be a mixed pool of puzzle pieces which is fitted perfectly around the frame of the story is jumbled for the viewers to put together later once the facts are thrown randomly without a thread to tie on. This makes it difficult for the audience to follow the structure of the story and dislocates the focus in the later parts of the movie.

Among the incredible supporting cast is the curious inclusion of Mandira Bedi, who in her slice performs mid and is forgettable while there are performances by Arjun Radhakarishnana, Shammi Thilakan who nail their roles.

The Verdict

Identity breaks a solid door for the Malayalam cinema for 2025 with a high octane, pumping thriller that is definitely a worthy multiple watch thriller that gives a harbinger style narrative and slips off as an easy consume for movie lovers.
