A tense thriller that was spoken in and about for months after release, ‘Maharaja’ directed by Nithilan Saminathan and stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead just got bigger with a slated release in China in around 40, 000 cinemas. The movie is planned for release on November 29 but had selected preview shows in a few screens across China from November 23 and had achieved quite a feat for itself.

The Tamil thriller produced by The Passion Studios and The Route was made on a meager budget of 20 crores has collected 21% of the original budget from preview screenings in China, impressing fans immensely. The videos and clippings from the preview shows revealed how much of an unexpected and edge- of -the – seat experience the movie has become for the Chinese spectators who were enthralled and simply hooked with the nonlinear narrative of ‘Maharaja’.
Titled as ‘Yin Gua Bao Ying’ for the Chinese audience, ‘Maharaja’ amassed an astonishing 1.09 crores on the first day of Preview with more than 23,000 people flooding the cinemas in China. This impressive opening garnered even more attention as Day 2 of Preview collection was reported to be 1.02 crores, raking a two days collection of 2.35 crores. As per News 18, tickets sold in China are about 45,600 at the end of day 2, with critical acclaim pouring in for the movie.
This is an impressive fleet considering this is just the collections form Preview screenings and the planned full fledged release will be even more promising from November 29, 2024. It also places Vijay Sethupathi for a global crowd, extending his success and fame. ‘Maharaja’ was originally released on June 14, with a theatrical collection estimated to be 110 crores and also becoming the most watched Indian film garnering 19.7 million viewers. The movie apart from Vijay Sethupathi stars Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan, Singampuli, Sachana Namidass, Munishkanth and more.
