The long standing case from 2012, KE Gnanvel Raja vs Arjunlal Sunderdas where the former was accused of swindling 12 crores from the bankrupt businessman and financial scammer Arjunlal Sunderdas. It all began in 2011 when the businessman was luring possible and potential investors to pitch in financial and real estate opportunities, who also invested in crores for KE Gnanvel Raja’s next production.
Arjunlal is said to have primarily pitched in 40 crores with the production house, but as his business became insolvent pulled out of investing in the movie. The businessman by then had invested 12 crores and demanded the amount from KE Gnanvel Raja and took him to the court.
The counsel of KE Gnanvel Raja reported that his client is bankrupt and cannot replay the amount that is invested in the movie. He also mentioned that for the said amount, Arjunlal was given the rights of three hindi movie remakes into Tamil. The applicant demanded 2 Crores after Arjunlal’s business went insolvent.
The case against KE Gnanvel Raja is ongoing from 2013 with the court ordering the respondent to pay the impending sum of 20 crores, including 18 percent interest. KE Gnanvel Raja has re – appealed further which was denied, even in 2019 he was ordered to settle the decreed amount to the assignee.
Restraining Kanguva Release
The bench headed by Justice G Jayachandran and Justice CV Karthikeyan revealed the restraint, ordering KE Gnanvel Raja to pay the impending amount before November 13. This was followed by the assignee, representing the late Arjunlal pushing another notice, reminding the panel that the respondee failed to pay 1 Crore as ordered by the court.

KE Gnanvel Raja the counsel of Studio Green filed an application, requesting to alter the order passed by the official bench, resulting in a hearing where the respondee paid the 1 crore, just few minutes before the hearing. This move by KE Gnanvel Raja was considered as manipulation in front of the court, as the respondee submitted 100 crores to Reliance Entertainment in another suit filed against him, as per DT NEXT.
The counsel represented for Studio Green put forth the argument implying the loss and suffrage this restraint would cause if the ‘Kanguva’ was not released on November 14 as it will affect not just the client but also the applicant as he (KE Gnanvel Raja) wouldn’t be able to repay.
