December 12 for majority of Rajnikanth fans is a day of celebration, very close to one of his film releases as fans either flock to get a glimpse of the actor at his residence or flood the theatres to watch his recent release. This year the special day is marked up for the re-release of Rajnikanth’s classic movie ‘Thalapathi’. The star is turning 74 with the upcoming birthday and fans who every year pray for his good health will also visit the theatres to witness the cult classic movie.
‘Thalapathi’ lays out a compelling and seamless story that is adapted from the epic Mahabharata and focuses mainly on the never spoken perspective of the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana played perfectly by Rajnikanth and Mammootty, whose portrayal of friendship that grew from animosity. The story is slowly built by the beautiful backdrop of emotions that speak about how Deva was orphaned at birth but reunites with his mother after decades. Music by Maestro Ilayaraja is breeze that takes the movie to places we never imagined while Santhosh Shivan’s cinematography from framing love between Rajnikanth and Shobana to depicting yearning between the protagonist and Sri Vidya still stands out as a syllabus for many.
The movie is distributed by SSI Productions and will be available for a rewatch in selected theatres in Tamil and Kannada as a remastered 4K version. This ‘Thalapathi’ re-release is followed by the recent release of Kamal Hassan’s Guna but only hyped more for the celebration that it brings along for the star’s birthday.
