Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan starrer ‘Kadhalikka Neramillai’ lays out a fresh and updated take on new age relationships that are boundless, unorthodox love along the veins of ‘O Kadhal Kanmani’. A ‘not – so generic’ Romantic Comedy after a long time in Tamil Cinema from established actors, ‘Kadhalikka Neramillai’ paints a simple, predictable story that is understood by the audience very early in the film.
Kadhalikka Neramillai Plot
A married woman Shreya finds out that her husband is having an affair behind her back and goes through divorce and finds a way to move on. A Bangalore based young man, Siddharth on the brink of getting engaged to his girlfriend is stood up by her at the minute, loses trust in marriage and relationships and spirals into a playboy. The two heartbroken people muster up courage and take a huge life choice that unites them forever in a way that neither of them imagined to be.

Shreya decides to get pregnant to cope up with her heartbreak through IVF which is ironic as Siddharth on the other side decides to donate his sperm. The movie starts off with these scenes that leave not much to intrigue the audience but involves some interesting characters.
The Positive Aspects
Director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi’s approach to an out of the box and progressive story about normalising the choice of IVF treatments and Sperm Donation is appreciable. As a fairly young director, her choice of narrating a daring concept that is not easily acceptable in society gives her an advantage.
Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan both do their roles impeccably and with clarity of what is expected of them. Shreya is a strong willed woman who looks for love and a family even after her past skeletons while Siddharth is against having children and is made to fall in love. These characters also have nuanced layers that are easily acted out by both Nithya Menen and Ravi Mohan.
The supporting characters are all seasoned and on point with their performances. Actors like Lal, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, Vinay Rai are all well fitted for their roles.
AR Rahman, just like always gives his fans something to hook on and rely on in this movie. Be it the breezy ‘Ennai Izukuthadi’ or the western song at the end, his music captivates fans and travels along the movie.
The Negative Aspects
The protagonists without any connecting reasons decide to make a decision that serves nothing but the connectivity factor that lacks the sufficient emotional connect essential for the audience to relate to the emotions experienced by the characters.
Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi’s vision in projecting a progressive film with never seen before or rarely showcased portrayals of IVF Treatment or Sperm Donation or Gay Parenting is welcome but when it lacks the essential emotion, it disconnects the audience who just see those aspects as ideas on screen rather than stepping into the concept and understanding it emotionally.
The Verdict
A nearly perfect Urban Romantic Comedy that starts off heavy then breezy with interesting characters that are just in need of proper writing other than a scratch on the surface. Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi has given a decent film that reflects the struggles of single parenting and bold life choices which could have had a more tighter screenplay. ‘Kadhalikka Neramillai’ is a good watch with friends and family for the holidays, a smooth, feel good ride.
