Highly anticipated and hyped ‘Kanguva’ opened with special shows amidst several hurdles with a stellar cast and crew. Directed by ‘Siruthai Siva’, is an overdone tale of eternal promises that is outstretched through brilliant visuals.
The synopsis of the movie is as described by the director, as a story of “Promises and Forgiveness” that is sprinkled with dormant elements of a generic heroic storyline. ‘Kanguva’ travels to and fro between the periodic and contemporary timelines that are weaved together by a silver thread of emotions that is charred.

The movie opened up with a lesser expected character of Suriya, ‘Francis’ a Bounty Hunter who works in accordance with the Police and is accompanied by Yogi Babu his partner. Disha Patani looks captivating and is not given much importance other than that of a glamorous commercial heroine.
Sivakarthikeyan, Sai Pallavi starrer ‘Amaran’ : Movie Review
The epic period plot follows shortly and lits the screen with the majestic frames and carefully curated visuals that is backed by a convincing storyline of the five islands – Perumachi, Arathi, Mukkaadu, Mandaiyaru, Vengadu and their corresponding history. The waiting and hype before revealing the brave warrior prince, ‘Kanguva’ was well set as the audience were truly immersed in his valour.
The story then unfolds with new characters Natarajan, who aids an alien invader and meets his end, igniting the fire that further reveals the emotional element of the story. The immediate emotional connection between ‘Kanguva’ and the character that binds the plot feels rushed and abrupt, leaving the fans to wonder for a silver lining or a deeper explanation.
The Positive Aspects
Screenplay is packed with astonishing action sequences that are believable due to Suriya’s physical transformation for the role and the actor even maintains different characteristics that differentiate ‘Francis’ and ‘Kanguva’.
The movie is elevated with the outstanding Visual effects, especially those periodic frames and captivating fights.
Madan Karky along with Adhi Narayana nails the accent in the periodic storyline that is understandable yet serves the purpose of levitating the timeline apart from the current timeline.

Bobby Deol paints an evil picture with little to no deflection and proves that an actor of his stature could pull off any role, irrespective of language barriers.
The Negative Aspects
‘Kanguva’ as a whole is a potent script on paper that even had the chances of propulsion halfway but is tangled in the second half due to repeated emotional flashbacks that dulls the already blunt screenplay.
Devi Sri Prasad who has impressed the background score in the enrapturing fight scenes in the middle of dense forests and high terrains has failed to do so in the climax fight.
Aiming for similar epic tribal colour, ‘Kanguva’ as a whole turned out to be a run down version of the likes of ‘The Vikings’ and ‘Game of Thrones’, topped by loud music that turns jarring after a point, severing the minimal connect even more.
The Verdict
Suriya who is making a comeback after 2 years has opted the right script that had great potential and scope for the actor who has given his all, but let down by a predictable screenplay. A commercial story underlined by compulsive emotions that is inflated more than necessary.
