‘Nirangal Moondru’ Review: A well planned visual plot with a shallow screenplay

Karthick Naren’s comeback with Atharva, Rahman and Sarathkumar starrer Nirangal Moondru serves the nonlinear thrill in first half, impressive dictation of characters, connecting the lives of three strangers with their own baggage and destiny that is almost predictable in the second half

REVIEW OVERVIEW

Nirangal Moondru

Nirangal Moondru starts with a narration visualised by a storyboard following shot by shot with a narrator laying out the setting for how the lives of three individuals- an aspiring director, a love struck student and a teacher played by Atharva, Dhushyanth Jayaprakash and Rahman respectively.

Nirangal Moondru Plot

A technicolour revelation of human struggles that is happening in a single night as an aftermath of past choices. A close nonlinear narrative of three intertwined characters that happen to meet at some point, resolving each other’s issues and surviving the night or not. An aspiring filmmaker whose script is stolen by a famous director, a lovestruck teenager looks for his kidnapped girlfriend and teacher who with a personal baggage has to find his kidnapped daughter and somehow all three of these people’s lives are intervened by several factors and characters that connect these lives.

The Positive Aspects

Karthick Naren’s milieu of dramatic intertwined narrative is interesting as three very different characters are placed in a position, in the middle of a dispute serving as the complication in the story is a perfect plot for a thriller movie. The way the characters are introduced to their respective complications and the way their lives are knotted to connect makes ‘Nirangal Moondru’ a intriguing movie.

Atharva as a disturbed and ambitious filmmaker ‘Vetri’ easily delivers the troubled aspects of how established are stealing upcoming, unknown talents while also spiraling with the usage of substance for the most part of the movie. His character also gives away the space for visual narration, prismatic cutaways and retrospective of life and its struggles. Just like Dhushyanth Jayaparakash who has easily consumed the tense, abrupt characteristics of a school boy, also grounding the character of Sree with ease. The young actor is going places after the performance as he was also impressive in his few prior roles.

Sookshamadharshini Movie Review: Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph engages with a clean thriller

It is a huge advantage for the movie that all the actors have justified their roles as

Rahman and Sarathkumar are given a confined role that is well done and even improvised. Both the actors have shown their experience, engaging the audience with subtle yet mysterious expressions that keeps us from judging their true intentions, further stretching the thrill.

The visuals easily transcends us in many scenes, elevating the story especially with Vetri’s tripping where he is simply acting on the atmosphere, this feel is delivered easily through impressive visuals. Tijo Tomy as the cinematographer also does his job, especially in scenarios of twists and interlinks.

The Negative Aspects

A perfect script with unique character perspectives that fell flat in the second half without any new contributions for progression or change in their own perspective. At least for the main characters that has been simmering for change and survival of the night has never given a space for retaining the said emotions.

The progressions in the matters of character development and narration dulls and pales in the second half, also fails to bring back the lighthearted or hyping Ilayaraja songs or any for the narration to hit harder as moving towards the climax.

The Verdict

‘Nirangal Moondru’ just like Karthick Naren’s debut ‘Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru’ may be categorised as a sleeper hit by many. An entertaining first half may retain the audience for the second half following a suspenseful cliffhanger that closes the intermission is shortly followed by a weary second half opening.
