‘Perusu’ Movie Review: A Hilarious One Liner Plot with Good Performances

What could possibly be an unusual circumstance that is ‘growing and tense’ after a man’s death? Knowing something in him is still alive! ‘Perusu’ banks on the one liner and delivers what is expected.

REVIEW OVERVIEW

Perusu

‘Perusu’, directed by Ilango Ramanathan who is remaking his own Singhalese movie ‘Tentigo’ in Tamil has delivered a borderline dark and hilarious family friendly adult drama that leaves you with a hefty laughter riot. With a stellar cast and crew and dramatic writing, the ‘A’ certificate film surprisingly conveys the plot and makes us belly laugh without making the ‘obvious and towering’ issue uncomfortable or nasty.

‘Perusu’ Movie Plot and Premise

Two brothers – Samikannu (Sunil) and Duraikannu (Vaibhav) find out that their father has passed away, but in an unusually uncomfortable way. The so-called Elderly person who is known as ‘Perusu’ is highly respected in the small town, and has a secret that unravels itself due to his unusual death. After finding out that their father died with an erectile dysfunction that couldn’t be contained makes up for a disastrously hilarious sequence where the family tries to handle and ‘downplay’ the issue. The resulting unravel of secrets, emotions and the clean yet running borderline dark joke delivers what was promised in the trailer.

The Positive Aspects

A death, an unusual one at that, leaves the family to handle the issue when past secrets and revelations from the passed person arrive at their doorstep may sound like a good plot for a thriller. This is where director Ilango Ramanathan has stood tall with his writing, making jokes after jokes that are serving belly laughs and dark chuckles for the mature audience. From the opening song placement that foreshadows the whole plot as a satire and the relatable premise of a nosy neighbour, greedy relatives and a triggered teen awaiting revenge are intertwined in a hilarious way.

The humour worked well majorly because of the refreshing chemistry and the way word play is handled by the cast in the film, especially the real to reel life brothers Vaibhav and Sunil have this fluid and subtle sequences that are both tickling and emotional. Actors Balasaravanan, Reddin Kingsley, Munishkanth add up to make a full blown drama full of flare and fun. The rest of the cast – Niharika NM, Deepa, Chandini Tamilarasan build up and support the plot when needed.

The Negative Aspects

The running adult joke of how the family manages and distracts their guests and neighbors from witnessing the dysfunction starts to become stale after a while, only backed by the dark jokes. More focus on dialogues except for the jokes could have been more appreciable and not so bland, especially when the main characters of Sunil and Vaibhav interact with the rest of the cast.

Second half which has to reap from first half hugely balances solely based on the characters and the new addons like actor Munishkanth’s character who takes on the role of finding and proving about the dysfunction or the character of Karunakaran who makes a comeback but left loose with a sudden release could have been neatly tied.

‘Perusu’ Verdict

‘Perusu’ justifies the title and the trailer pulls the audience into this vortex of a sensitive topic that is handled expertly with a fun and hilarious troupe. Director Ilango Ramanathan neatly handles the trope of Adult Comedy and makes it doable for the family audience. An above average plotline that will definitely entertain you over the weekend, can be watched with friends and family.
