‘Vidaamuyarchi’ Movie Review: A Passable Thriller with a Stretched Screenplay

Director Magizh Thirumeni’s ‘Vidaamuyarchi’, a Tamil remake of ‘Breakdown’ delivers a slow paced adaptation that is neither for the Tamil audience nor sticks to the sustained thriller narrative.

‘Vidaamuyarchi’, the movie that after several hindrances and delays finally released for the reception of the audience on the big screen, with decent hype mainly among Actor Ajith Kumar’s fans, lands a comfortable spot but fails to hit the highs and lows for the Tamil audience. Starring Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja, Regina Cassandra, Aarav in prominent roles, the movie is helmed by Director Magizh Thirumeni and bankrolled by Lyca Productions.

Vidaamuyarchi Plot

Arjun and Kayal meet on vacation and find a connection that grows into a beautiful relationship and blossoms into marriage. After 12 years of marriage, Kayal files for divorce, feeling lost and tired of married life with Arjun who asks for another chance at making things work. They decide on having one last road trip to her parents’ house which is a 9 hours drive away, and turns out to be their worst nightmare coming true. When their seemingly good car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and a friendly stranger offers a ride to the nearby town to contact help, Kayal boards the truck leaving Arjun to stay with the car.

As Arjun finally gets his car started, he couldn’t find his wife in the said place, leading him to search for Kayal in a strange place with no clues. The following search combined with interesting characters make up for the rest of the movie.

The Positive Aspects

The cinematography by Om Prakash captures stunning visuals and gripping car chases in the second half. From getting the sheer vastness of the Azerbaijan Landscape is a confident plus for the movie.

Interesting characters played by unexpected actors like Rakshith and Deepika played by Arjun Sarja and Regina Cassandra take the tone of the film to another zone. The deadly combo along with Arav, Nikhil Nair, Ganesh Saravanan run the show in the second half with their evilness, adding to the awaited high aspects of the film.

Occasions like the love montage sequences in the beginning creates a good base with both Ajith Kumar and Trisha Krishnan looking magical together. The duo also creates animosity and distance in the same way catering to the short pitched sequences of their personal life.

Ajith Kumar starts off with a mundane monotonous character rose to this doting husband who just wants his wife back impresses with his usual car stunts and action sequence in the second half, which is elevated equally by Anirudh Ravichander’s fiery music.

The Negative Aspects

Taking a known story and making it work for the Tamil audience that too with a prominent actor comes with great pressure and Magizh Thirumeni never seemed to counter solve the issue by adding much needed masala or action element to the story, which comes late in the second half.

Although the lead actors share a palpable chemistry that looks sturdy on screen doesn’t essentially translate emotions to the audience. Scenes where their trust is put to test and them backing each other fails to evoke any deep emotions or connect with the viewers.

Predictable sequences and stagnant first half downplays the extent of the characters who had the whole first half to perform, which was used for discussing and connecting the dots, only much slower than needed. Adding to it, there is not much showcase of how much time has passed from the kidnap to the climax as there seems to be no change or reference to how much time has passed resulting in no highs or lows apart from the action sequences.

‘Vidaamuyarchi’ Movie Special Screening Granted by Tamil Nadu Government

The Verdict

Vidaamuyarchi gets past the gate with marveling visuals, stunt choreography and in sticking to the goal of the story. The thrill element escapes and dissolves in the dullness of the stretchy first half but sparks with the action sequences in the second half, only to glow off at the end. A not so relatable twist that went unaddressed regarding loyalty while one person keeping up the commitment might not be the cup of tea for the Tamil audience yet. A costly road trip drama with some thrill elements added by the evil characters alone.
