India is highly populated and one of the countries with the highest users of the internet. It has been reported by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (14 C) that more than 7,000 cyber crimes are filed per day. The percentage of cybercrime has been increasing everyday. Both the common people and the high profile personalities become prey to such cybercrimes.
The inception of AI in the technology paved the way for another version of cybercrime such as, deep fake videos. The Pan-Indian star Rashmika Mandanna was one of the victims whose deep fake video went viral in November 2023.
“I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deep fake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused. Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well wishers who are my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft” – Said Rashmika after the viral spread of a deep fake video.
It panicked the whole nation because of the new technologies’ gore face that could ruin anybody’s peaceful life. After the swift investigation, Delhi police arrested a 24-year old social media editor and manager, Eemani Naveen. The case was filed under,
- Section 465 and 469 of IPC (Indian Penal Code) for forgery and maligning the reputation of a person.
- Section 66C – Identity theft
- Section 66E – Privacy Violation of the Information Technology Act, 2000
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (14 C) has appointed Rashmika Mandanna as the National Ambassador under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
